5 reasons your website is slow (and how to fix it)

January 2026 5 min read Sem van Wijk

A slow website costs you customers every day. Research shows that 53% of visitors leave a mobile website if it takes longer than 3 seconds to load. In this article we explain the 5 most common causes and how to fix them.

Before diving into the causes, it's worth understanding why this matters so much. A visitor forms an opinion about your business within seconds. If your site loads slowly, they leave before reading a single word about your offer. Speed isn't a technical detail: it's the difference between winning or losing a customer. In practice we see the same five culprits again and again. We'll go through them one by one, explaining exactly what you can do about each.

1. Oversized images

By far the biggest culprit on most websites. You upload a 4MB photo straight from your phone, and your website has to load that huge file on every visitor's screen. That takes seconds.

Solution: Compress images before uploading. Use tools like TinyPNG or Squoosh. A good website image is usually no larger than 200KB. Also use the modern WebP format instead of JPG or PNG.

A handy rule of thumb: a photo taken with your phone is quickly 3 to 5MB. That same photo often only needs a fraction of that size on your website to still look sharp. Using that difference can sometimes halve a page's load time, without a visitor noticing a single pixel of quality loss.

2. Too many plugins (WordPress)

Every plugin you install adds code that must load on every page. 30 plugins means 30 times extra work for the browser on every pageview.

Solution: Audit your plugins. Keep only what you truly need. Or have a custom website built without that overhead.

3. No browser caching

Without caching, your website reloads all files for every visitor. With caching, static files are stored locally after the first visit. After that the site loads instantly.

Solution: Enable caching via your hosting or a plugin. Custom-built websites have this built into the configuration by default.

4. Poor hosting

The cheapest shared hosting at €2 a month sounds attractive, but you share the server with hundreds of other websites. One busy neighbour and your site grinds to a halt.

Solution: Invest in decent hosting. For most SME websites, a good VPS or premium shared hosting around €10-€20 per month is sufficient.

Think of hosting as the foundation of a house: you don't see it, but everything depends on it. A few extra euros a month often means a server that serves your website blazingly fast, even at the busiest moment of the day. That investment pays for itself as soon as it brings in one extra customer.

5. Unnecessarily heavy code

Many themes and page builders generate bloated code: thousands of lines of CSS and JavaScript you never use. Result: slow load times without you even realising it.

Solution: A clean, hand-written website is always faster than a drag-and-drop site. On every S. van Wijk Solutions project, we write every line of code ourselves, with a focus on speed.

What does speed actually do for you?

  • More conversions: every extra second of load time costs an average of 7% conversion
  • Better on Google: speed has been an official ranking factor since 2021
  • Lower bounce rate: visitors stay longer
  • Better impression: fast sites feel more professional

How do you measure speed?

Use Google PageSpeed Insights (free): paste in your URL and get a report with concrete improvements. A score above 90 is excellent. Between 70-90 is good. Below 70 you should take action.
